Welcome to Altarnun Pre-School
Introduction ¦ OFSTED Inspection Report ¦ Altarnun Forest School

Altarnun Pre-School

Our pre-school is located in Five Lanes adjoining Altarnun primary school, easily accessible and is in an ideal location for both local families and those living or working between Bodmin and Launceston. Children can start at the age of two and stay with us until the age of five. Our spacious classroom is bright and airy and it provides the children with ample room for all the activities we offer. We also have a garden and outdoor area in which the children play whatever the weather.

Our goal is to provide a safe and caring environment where children can gain a positive approach to school and learning. They will learn to care for and respect each other, whilst learning how to be part of a group. Good nursery education is crucial to a child's formative years and fosters an enthusiasm and confidence that will remain with them throughout their school life.

Our experienced and dedicated staff help the children to become successful learners, confident individuals and effective contributors to society. Children learn through play and planned activity with a balance of free choice.

OFSTED Inspection Report

"This provision is good

  • The committee supports the manager and staff well to provide efficient organisation and monitoring of their provision. Self-evaluation is effective. Management and staff make continuous improvements to their resources and skills, which is beneficial to children.
  • The manager and staff have positive partnerships with parents and others. This enables them to support children's individual needs and progress well. For example, to provide additional support in children's communication and language development.
  • Children enjoy a good range of activities and enjoy learning through play. They are sociable, confident and play well together. Children feel very secure as staff prepare them well for entry to pre-school and school.
  • Effective observation, assessment and planning procedures identify children's next steps and track progress well. The manager and staff continue to develop their good procedures, to extend the opportunities to involve parents further in the assessment of children's progress.

Altarnun Forest School

Our Forest School is an inspirational process, one that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural outdoor environment.

Lead by our qualified practitioners, our Forest School views participants as:

  • equal, unique and valuable
  • competent to explore & discover
  • entitled to experience appropriate risk and challenge
  • entitled to choose and to initiate and drive their own learning and development
  • entitled to experience regular success
  • entitled to develop positive relationships with themselves and other people
  • entitled to develop a strong, positive relationship with their natural world

This learner-centred approach interweaves with the ever-changing moods and marvels, potential and challenges of the natural world through the seasons to fill every Forest School session and programme with discovery and difference. Yet each programme does also share a common set of principles, aimed at ensuring that all learners experience the cumulative and lasting benefits that quality Forest School offers.
